Oh Lila

Reducing harm caused by alcohol

FAQs

Will my child learn about alcohol?

No. Oh Lila does not mention alcohol or any other substance. The key aim of the resource is to help your child to develop life skills, the focus of the resource is not to teach your child about alcohol.

I/We don’t have any problems at home so why is Oh Lila being used with my child?

Oh Lila encourages children to seek help and emphasises the importance of having positive relationships. These skills can help all children in their lives as they grow and develop.

Has Oh Lila been used before?

Yes. Oh Lila has been piloted and evaluated in nurseries in West Lothian and Glasgow. Since its launch in 2010, many local authorities across Scotland and the UK now use the resource in nurseries and pre-school settings.

Alcohol Focus Scotland recommends that nurseries using the resource are trained to ensure it is used correctly, therefore, you can be assured that those working with your child have the knowledge and skills to make sure that your child gets the best out of the resource.

Will I be asked to get involved?

Oh Lila is a very flexible resource pack that allows nurseries to use the resource in a way that suits the children and families they work with best.

Some nurseries do seek to involve parents by providing home information packs, holding parents/guardians information sessions or even inviting parents to come in and read the story.

Why not have a look at our activities page for ways that you can use Oh Lila with your child at home.

Will my child be encouraged to ask strangers for help?

No. In using Oh Lila children are encouraged to identify trusted adults. For most children, their parents, guardians or family are the adults they are most likely to go to when they are scared or worried. However, as your child grows and develops they will have a range of other trusted adults who can also provide them with support when they are at nursery or school.
